Fact Checking tools

MediaSmarts Fact search

If you are wanting to do a general search on a topic you are not to sure about, the MediaSmarts Fact search engine searches all fact-checking sites at the same time including Snopes, AFP Fact Check and other reliable fact-checking sites.

AFP Fact Check

When fact-checking on AFP, you can search by topic, region or what is trending in the news. They have high ethical standards and provide detailed information about how they fact-check information.

Snopes

Created in 1994, Snopes is one of the more well-known and reliable fact-checking sites. "Snopes is a member of IFCN and in compliance with the International Fact Checking Network's highest standards of combating misinformation online" (Snopes, 2024).

*All of the mentioned fact-checking sites are approved and recommended by the Government of Canada

Three steps to fact-checking

  1. Find the source: Check the link to see who is responsible for publishing the information.
  2. Verify the source: Check Google or Wikipedia to see if the source is real and if it has a good reputation.
  3. Check other sources: Do a search to see if other news outlets are reporting the same story
